Winter Weather And School Closings

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: WINTER WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS

The safety of all Nicolet students and staff is our primary concern in making a decision to close schools.

WHAT FACTORS ARE CONSIDERED WHEN MAKING THE DECISION TO CLOSE SCHOOL?

Whenever practical, we will make the decision about closing school the night before, however, when the weather conditions change (or are predicted to change) overnight, it may be necessary to cancel school in the morning.

In deciding whether it will be safe to attend school, we look at the following factors:

  • National Weather Service’s WARNING level to determine any need to close schools for snow or cold

  • The bus company, Riteway, determines it is not able to run buses safely

  • Building conditions (e.g., whether schools have power and heat)

  • Temperature and wind-chill. The guideline used for considering closure due to temperature is minus 25 degrees and guideline for considering closure due to a sustained wind chill of minus 40 degrees.

School district superintendents from southeastern Wisconsin along within the Nicolet Area School Superintendents (Fox Point-Bayside, Glendale-River Hills, Maple Dale-Indian Hill, and Nicolet High School) work together and come to a consensus about what each district is planning and what is best for the students, staff and families.  Typically the decision making process is started as early as 4:00 a.m. and communication to families and area news media could begin as early as 5:30 a.m.

HOW IS THE PUBLIC NOTIFIED?

  • Local news and radio broadcast by the local news and radio stations

  • Families receive a phone call and/or email

  • Nicolet’s website homepage

PARENT DECISION

If families find conditions unsafe to send their child(ren) to school, they may keep their child(ren) home.  Absences will be excused, but families MUST CALL IN for the absence to be excused.
