Get to Know Your Athletic Trainer

Aurora Sports Health Athletic Trainer Marissa Strehlow has been caring for student athletes at Nicolet Union High School since 2014.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Concordia University Wisconsin and a Master of Athletic Training from A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ. Additionally, she is a certified First Aid and CPR Instructor. Her advanced skill set includes throwing, running and concussion management specializations.

Why she wanted to become an athletic trainer:
Marissa appreciates the full-circle aspect of athletic training – from conditioning and strengthening athletes to assessing and rehabilitating injuries. Her focus with athletes is to improve their sports performance, prevent injuries and help them safely return to the field or court confident in their ability to play at their highest level.

Her favorite athletic training memory:
Just 17 days prior to the state wrestling championships, I diagnosed my nationally ranked athlete with a meniscus tear. Earlier in the season, the same student had been sidelined with a meniscus repair on his other knee. This athlete was committed to returning to his sport; “no” was not part of his vocabulary.

Just three days after surgery and many hours of rehabilitation, he wrestled and qualified for the tournament. Amazingly, he went on to win the state title in his weight class. After winning, he came into the stands to personally thank me for all the work we had done together over the past season.

Seeing that I can make a difference is the reason why I am an athletic trainer. My athletes' successes make me proud; I love to see them achieve their goals.

Her favorite athletes:
The injured wrestler that went on to win a state title is one of my favorites. Not only is he a dedicated athlete, but he’s also a wonderful human being.

Additionally, I admire professional basketball player Jalen Johnson. I met him when he played basketball for Nicolet and saw him grow into a caring, responsible adult with remarkable talent.

In her spare time, Marissa enjoys spending time with her family, attending sporting events and reading.
